Halloween Weekend Kneeler Jeopardy

It can't be Friday already. Tomorrow is Halloween. As a kid, the day couldn't come soon enough, but as a parent it's like we just did this awhile ago. Didn't we?

Happy Halloween!! Remember daylight savings, to pray for reparations, and pray for the Poor Souls. Also, Father Z reminds us that you can obtain several indulgences next week, especially in this Year for Priests. Pray for our priests, both living and dead.

Category: It's better in Latin

I don't know how to phrase this so ArchAngel's Advocate won't get it right away, but let's just hope he's busy doing the Monster Mash and doesn't notice. Here goes. This man is well-known in various fields of study. In philosophy, he's known by his given name, while in mathematics he's known by his Latin name. (I hope that's obtuse enough.)

Bonus points if you know his famous quote, ala Latin. (We just learned it in Linney's Latin!)

St. Alex says, please place your answer in the form of a question in the combox, and say a few Hail Marys while you wait for the answer to be revealed.

Demerits for using Google and other sneaky searches. Educated guesses are welcome and encouraged. Good luck!!

I know who it is, but will give others a sporting chance. I'll also tell you a pun on his name which cracked up an stoic English professor of mine in college.

Hmmm. Thanks to AA for honesty and a "sporting chance."

Might I get a the first twofer at St. Alex's?

Who is DesCartes? [Cartesian?]

Cogito ergo sum!

or, a more Catholic version:

Deus est ergo sum!

Aw, you guys are too smart. I know AA knows the answer because he commented before about a cart and horse. So, we have two Jeopardy champs!! Congrats AGAIN, Ray and AA!! And, Ray, you score the bonus of getting the Latin in there too.

Ray...I'm just learning Latin but does your last quote say, "God is, therefore I am?"

St. Alex is considering banning you guys...you're blowing away the competition!!

Swissie:

Well, I don't know if Cicero or Pliny would have said it that way, but that's what I kind of figured out.

Maybe, more theologically accurately it should be:

Deus me amat; ergo sum.

God loves me, therefore I am.

You just happened to pick a couple of things that I knew, Swissie. Most of your questions I totally struck out on.

I don't know too much about DesCartes except that he was pretty smart, and pretty anti-Church, I think. He was one of those that wrote the French encyclopedia. And that's about it.

And after a check with my pal, Wiki, I find that I was wrong about everything in that last paragraph except the part about him being pretty smart. And he lived over 100 years before I thought he did.

D'oh! I was going to say Pythagerus (not even sure I spelled it right!). I'm content with my sole win at WKJ! It may have to last me my entire life!

He was a contemporary of Isaac Newton, and is credited with Newton as the inventor of differential calculus (which we use to send rockets to the moon among other things). Newton shares the credit for integral calculus with another mathematician/philosopher, Liebnitz.
Philosophically, we would have been better off if they had put Descartes before de horse BOO!

He also created the Cartesian coordinate system so we can havigate with maps & GPS (latitude & longitude).

Yeah, but you got the code so you can brag about your win. I'm still waiting.

Those of us raised on Alex of Trebek, and his holy predecessor Art of Fleming, have a God given Gift of having a distinct advantage.
BTW I suspect the writers of the secular Jeopardy are Roman Catholic as a good number of the questions deal with things Catholic.

Members of my family have always wondered why I haven't tried to get on the show.

The real problem is that I know virtually nothing about popular movies, music or about television after the 1950s.

There is a Jeopardy! game on the Internet that I do well at, though. But they don't seem to have very many "popular" questions.

I was actually in the contestant pool. Never was called, though. Maybe I should try again.
