Sorry Sportsfans. From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary entry for dicese:"Middle English diocise, from Anglo-French, from Late Latin diocesis, alteration of dioecesis, from Latin, administrative division, from Greek dioikēsis administration, administrative division, from dioikein to keep house, govern, from dia- + oikein to dwell, manage, from oikos house" (I thought iw ould come from Diocletian, a Roman emperor who persecuted Christians...
Hmmm. From what I remember, don't have anything that talks about this in front of me, the Roman emperor Diocletian split this realm up into various "diocese" named after his humble self. Christian diocese adopted this name for their ecclesial jurisdictions. Ironic because, like AA says, Diocletian persecuted Christians and was the one who brought about the martyrdom of St. Philomena, our family's patron.
