Weekend Kneeler Jeopardy

This week a prize will be awarded for the first correct response. My creative friend, Vincenzo, has come up with the Weekend Kneeler Jeopardy award. This is a major award with an Italian pedigree. Please keep that in mind when answering.

The award will be sent to you in a wooden crate marked "fra-gee-lay."

Play fair, no fighting.

Category: Catholic Universities

Officially, although still contested, this city is home to the first Catholic University established in the New World.

Extra points for providing the name of the University and/or the religious order that founded it.

St. Alex says, please place your answer in the form of a question in the combox, and say a few Hail Marys while you wait for the answer to be revealed. NB: I have turned on comment moderation to see if this works better, allowing multiple people to guess the same answer since they won't be able to see what other people have previously answered. We'll try it and see how it works.

Demerits for using Google and other sneaky searches. Educated guesses are welcome and encouraged. Good luck!!

Here's but a glimpse of what could be yours with the correct question.

What is William & Mary in Baltimore, Maryland?

OK, I missed last week's "candle" question.

Then for today:

What is Mount St. Mary's College of Emmitsburg, Maryland?

Now I'll go and look up the real answer. I happen to have heard Mt. St. Mary's mentioned on EWTN the other day along with the name of the really oldest one, but my memory has failed me on what that was. I'd betcha Swissy was watching the same program.

Maybe I should go to a psychic? Do committing Mortal Sins to find the answer invalidate answers on St. Alex's program?

Comments have suggested I turn off comment moderation, so we'll see if this works better. It's easier on me anyhoo.

So far, you guys are not even close. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I said NEW WORLD, not America, for a reason.

Father Erik: Whacha see is whacha get, the WNJ award created by the multi-talented Vineczo, suitable for framing.

New World, eh? The I'm going to guess: hat is Havana, Cuba by the Dominicans? (I haven't a clue as to its name).

I saw the "New World" reference and thought that might be it, but since I knew of the name of no universities south of the Rio Grande, figuring Lavalle U in Canada would be wrong, I chose to be provincial.

How about: What is Universidad de Mexico? If it exists. Lo ciento mucho!

Swissy: What is St. Augustine, Florida? Founded by the Jesuits. Don't know the school name.

I have a feeling though it may be somewhere in the Caribbean or South America given your New World emphasis.

Hmmm. AA is correct with Dominicans, but is still to far north. To narrow it down, it's in South America.

What is Bogata, Columbia?

You're getting close :)

How about Rio de Janeiro, Brazil?

Amanda:
You would think it would be Rio, but nope. AA was close with the western coast.

I came up with 2 possibilities, one in the Caribbean and one in South America. But as I used Google to find them, St. Alex wou;d smite me if I gave the answer.

AA:
I commend you on your honesty...or the fear of being smote :)

You were very close.

The answer is Lima, Peru. The university is the National University of St. Mark, est in 1551 by the Dominicans.

So, the coveted WNJ award will have to wait until next week!!!

There was a canidate in the Domincan Republic but I couldn't ascertain that it is CURRENTLY Catholic (it appears to have gone secular but that action isn't certain).
