I just got home and was about to post a hint when I found your comment. It is not St. Martin of Tours, but this person had an important victory at the Battle of Tours. You must be channeling the answer.

Getting closer...Roland served under this person's grandson.
I kinda knew it wasn't St. Martin and then when I checked him out I see he died in about 400 and the Battle of Tours was around 750-75 or so as the Saracens were moving north from Spain towards Paris. If Paris had fallen, that would have been it for Christianity.
I have a time-line on Islam attacks on western-Christian civilization. But I don't want to cheat.
I have gotten St. Martin confused with this guy in the past. I think that there is a pretty famous painting of him in the battle.

I would have gotten it only if you had made it one of the answers of a multiple choice question.
But I did know it was that battle, one of the most important in world history.
Th operative word is "Near". I did not answer, so I did not sin (raised by Jebbies, I am!).
From the sources I found, it also appears that ol' Chuck may have been a close personal friend of Dante. Friends in High Places, I guess.
